At the Volunteer Center, we are proud to highlight our literacy program, which connects dedicated volunteer tutors with individuals in Santa Cruz County who seek to improve their English language skills. Our program is more than just teaching; it’s about empowering people to communicate effectively, gain confidence, and open doors to new opportunities. This month, we shine a light on the incredible impact our volunteers make and invite you to join us in supporting literacy in our community.
The Critical Need for Literacy
In Santa Cruz County, low literacy presents serious challenges: 6% of households don’t speak or read English, and 23% of adults struggle with basic literacy. This problem impacts economic stability and social well-being, affecting children’s academic success and future opportunities. Improving literacy benefits individuals, families, and communities, as seen in stories like Guillermo’s, who advanced in his career and education through literacy support.
Celebrating the Literacy Program
Since 1967, the Volunteer Center’s Literacy Program has been pivotal in adult education in Santa Cruz County. By pairing volunteer tutors with learners, it builds confidence and opens new opportunities. With programs like Survival English, over 10,000 adults have gained crucial skills, leading to increased wages or better job prospects for over 80% of participants. This success highlights the impact of our dedicated volunteers and community support.

How You Can Support Literacy
With rising living costs, more individuals are seeking literacy education than ever before. Take Guillermo’s story: he joined our Literacy Program to find a job and enroll in a medical training program. With the help of his tutor, Charles, Guillermo crafted a resume, prepared for interviews, and learned to navigate public transportation. His hard work led to a job at Panda Express, opening a bank account, and now, budgeting and planning for healthcare training. Guillermo’s success highlights the transformative impact of your support. Consider making a special gift to recruit and train new tutors for learners like Guillermo, eager to achieve their goals.
