October Opportunites to Make a Difference

October is jam packed with ways you can make a difference in Santa Cruz County from celebrating local service champions to getting out there to take action in your own neighborhood. The Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County would like to invite you to show up for the places and causes you love this month.

winners_photo2014On October 16th community leaders, local business representatives, and community members will fill the room at the Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz from 11:30 AM- 1:30PM for the 9th Annual Be the Difference Awards Gala to honor the individuals, groups and businesses in Santa Cruz County who make a difference through volunteerism. More than 50 nominees will be recognized and five will receive special honors.

On the heels of this event community members are invited to take action to inspire a love a reading at Read Across the Globe. On Oct 19th volunteers from around the world will join together to read to children in an effort to make this the single largest day of reading to children in history.

The Points of Light Foundation will seek to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most children read to in a 24 hour period. Communities around the world have stepped up to spread awareness, schedule reading sessions, or become an official Guinness Book location.

ys-tutors & kids-website-editTo celebrate their goal the our program YouthSERVE and the Watsonville High School ECHO Academy will read to 600 students at Starlight Elementary School. By giving just an hour of your time you can be a part of this incredible global movement. Adult volunteers are needed to read with the kids, take photos, distribute books, and register readers.

Last but definitely not least, the month will come to a close with an all out blitz of community action at the Great Santa Cruz County Clean-up in honor of Make a Difference Day on Saturday, October 24th. On this day millions of Americans across the country will volunteer in their communities for the largest day of community service in the nation.

It’s your chance to show up for the places you love in Santa Cruz County. Together we will clean up, clear out, and revitalize our community, one neighborhood at a time.
