AmeriCorps Members Serving Here

This is AmeriCorps Week and programs across the country are celebrating the members that get things done for America!

We are proud of the 11 AmeriCorps VIP Fellows that are now serving in our community! This year they will each volunteer for 1700 hours to support organizations in Santa Cruz County. They build the capacity of the organizations, connect volunteers with programs in need of support and raise funds. This program is an opportunity for our members to gain valuable professional development opportunities while giving back. Members are connected to a mentor throughout the year to support their work and reach their full potential. They bring their unique skills to maximize the impact of existing programs.

Lindsey Tuck has this to say about serving as an AmeriCorps member, “I’m excited to dive deeper into my position here at the Volunteer Center! Being able to make a difference is an awesome opportunity. I work with inspiring volunteers everyday!”This year our members came from across the country with Melissa Miketa relocating all the way from North Carolina! We are excited to see what new innovations these talented young people bring to our community! If you see someone in town wearing their AmeriCorps “A” ask about their service and help us say “thank you” for their dedication.

We launched our local Americorps program with just 5 members in 2009 and have just hired our 90th hardworking member! In the past 10 years we’ve partnered with local nonprofits including Ecology Action, Digital Nest, The Homeless Services Center, The Diversity Center, The Young Writer’s Program, the Walnut Avenue Family & Women’s Center and many more to engage 13,258 volunteers to support community programs. Collectively these volunteers have contributed 176,612 hours and $4,160,978 in donated labor!
