MLK Day Happenings 2018

Are you looking for ways to connect with our community in the New Year?  Martin Luther King Jr Day provides the perfect opportunity with options throughout the holiday weekend.  Check out the list of events from education and marching to community action, there is something for everyone. MLK Youth Day

Sat. Jan 13 12-4 PM | Resource Center for Non-Violence | 612 Ocean St. Santa Cruz.

Enjoy a day of food, activities, music, art, expression, and education with an emphasis on youth empowerment. With local nonprofit organizations, youth-led projects and performances the day is dedicated to inspiring young minds and empowering young hearts. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with an intergenerational cross section of local leaders while they learn about local organizations and opportunities to get involved in the community.

NAACP Gospel Celebration

Sat. Jan 13 7-9PM | Resource Center for Non-Violence | 612 Ocean St. Santa Cruz

Featuring Tammi Brown, Inner light gospel choir, Monterey peninsula community gospel choir, Progressive Missionary Baptist Church Men’s choir, and other gospel voices Tickets are $20 at the door.

 

 

MLK National Day of Service Events

Mon Jan 15- Options Available Throughout the Day | Throughout Santa Cruz County

Each year millions of Americans choose to join together in their local communities to honor the legacy of Dr King through a day of community service.  Join the Volunteer Center and fellow non-profits as we engage in volunteer projects throughout Santa Cruz County. Help maintain a local garden, jump on a restoration project, brighten the day for a struggling community member, or help revitalize community spaces.

MLK Day March for the Dream

Mon Jan 15- 9-12:30 PM | Downtown Santa Cruz | Pacific Avenue between Cathcart and Cedar Streets

NAACP Santa Cruz County Branch and the Santa Cruz Police Department invite you to join them in marching to honor Dr. King. Enjoy post march speeches and family-friendly activities on Cooper Street in partnership with the Museum of Art and History.

Share the Warmth Clothing Drive

Mon Jan 15-31 | Drop off Locations throughout Santa Cruz County

Our Program Friends Outside will kick off their annual Clothing and Blanket Drive on MLK Day Mon Jan 15. You are invited to donate new and gently used coats, scarves, blankets, and new toiletries. You can drop your donations on MLK Day between 12-4 PM at Santa Cruz Bible Church or drop off your items at locations throughout Santa Cruz County between Jan 16-31.
