Volunteer Profiles - Meet Mike: Volunteer with Helping Hands!
Don’t be afraid. You’re not in it alone, there’s people there that can help get you started and give you advice.
When Mike moved to Santa Cruz from East Bay in 2014, he had no idea how valuable his time and effort as a volunteer for Helping Hands would be. A retired electrical engineer, Mike has been a volunteer with the Volunteer Center’s Helping Hands program for about 4 years, and in that time he has made a huge impact by installing grab bars for seniors in their homes! “I just feel if I’ve got the ability to help somebody, why not? It doesn’t cost me anything… At some point in time I might need help in my life,” Mike says, in reference to how he got inspired to make a difference in his community. He is also an avid member of the Santa Cruz Cycling Club, staying active by biking hundreds of miles per month.
Mike’s advice for others hoping to start their volunteer journey is simple: “Don’t be afraid. You’re not in it alone, there’s people there that can help get you started and give you advice. In my case, when I first started, I was able to work with someone much more experienced than me and they taught me the ropes.” He was especially appreciative of Tara Ireland, our Division Director of Empowered Aging, and the other staff who he says have been so helpful and welcoming every step of the way. Mike hopes to continue volunteering and making a difference for many years to come.
If Mike’s story inspires you to get involved in your local community by volunteering, we would love to find the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!
