In Santa Cruz County, low literacy presents serious challenges: 6% of households don’t speak or read English, and 23% of adults struggle with basic literacy. This problem impacts economic stability and social well-being, affecting children’s academic success and future opportunities. Improving literacy benefits individuals, families, and communities, as seen in stories like Guillermo’s, who advanced in his career and education through literacy support.
Celebrating the Literacy Program
Since 1967, the Volunteer Center’s Literacy Program has been pivotal in adult education in Santa Cruz County. By pairing volunteer tutors with learners, it builds confidence and opens new opportunities. With programs like Survival English, over 10,000 adults have gained crucial skills, leading to increased wages or better job prospects for over 80% of participants. This success highlights the impact of our dedicated volunteers and community support.
