"She honestly had no idea what Google was, which for me was mind-blowing.” - Aidan
Aidan is a high school student from Aptos who has volunteered with Senior Tech Support for two years. He started volunteering with Senior Tech Support to fulfill his required community service hours for school, but the experience has been more meaningful than he expected.
He has helped older adults with their technological questions for 15 hours at Watsonville Community Hospital and the Louden Nelson Center. Aidan considers himself “somewhat tech-savvy”, but not an “expert.” Aidan explained that “most of their questions were simple, like how to delete emails from their accounts or how to use Google.” He was glad the amount of knowledge he did have allowed him to troubleshoot and research solutions if he didn’t immediately know the answer.
Volunteering has given Aidan perspective on how different it is to grow up today, and how his knowledge of technology can make a difference in his community. One experience that he remembers vividly was teaching a senior how to use Google to help her solve the problems that she had with her email. “She honestly had no idea what Google was, which for me was mind-blowing.” The senior was “amazed by the endless possibilities of the search engine” and having “the power of the internet at her fingertips.” Sharing his knowledge “just felt right” to Aidan.
