Volunteer Profiles - Meet the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union

In their Words...

"We believe in empowering individuals who society has marginalized."

Established in 1977, Santa Cruz Community Credit Union (SCCCU) is a local, independent, member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative that promotes economic justice for all. They believe in empowering individuals who society has marginalized, and they are committed to providing members with opportunities and exposure to positive social and economic change. They provide DACA loans for students in need, accept ITIN numbers to open accounts or apply for loans, offer a Second Chance Checking Account and credit-building loans to give people a fresh start, and so much more.

As a pure community credit union, they are committed to the people who live and work in Santa Cruz County and the northern portion of Monterey County. They provide free online and in-person financial literacy training programs to adults and K-12 students. They created the Diamond Technology Institute’s Business Plan Competition and continue to support the event every year. They partner with many different non-profit organizations that are focused on supporting a diverse group of people in our community, including the Pajaro Valley Shelter Services, Youth NOW, CASA, CAB, the Diversity Center, GEAR UP UCSC, the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County, Second Harvest Food Bank, and many more.

In 2020, the Credit Union created and launched the Return the Favor campaign to support local non-profits during the pandemic — the program raised over $180,000 to support our community during a time of great uncertainty. As they move into 2021, they plan to continue these efforts and more.

We invite you to learn more about SCCCU at scccu.org.
