Volunteer Profiles - Meet Roman

Roman Bodnarchuck, a young man from Ukarine is a volunteer to treasure. He wanted to find a way to give back to his new community and has found the perfect spot volunteering with CitySERVE at Santa Cruz City Hall. He volunteers in the gardens where the people he meets let him know how much they appreciate his commitment to keeping the area looking beautiful.

Roman comes from a multi-generational farm family where farming is the primary way to supply the family with food, as well as an income. Spring for him is a time to enjoy the wonder of blooming trees and plants and remember his extended family working together so the family will have food for the rest of the year. Volunteering is one of the ways he is building connections to his new community as he talks with people who visit the gardens.

He feels this volunteer position has made him more responsible as he sees of how much damage people do when they don’t take care of their community, and how many people there are who believe that giving back and being good stewards is an important part of being a part of a community. He is definitely a steward as well as an ambassador to the public.
