Family Volunteer Day and Beyond

This Saturday, November 17th is Family Volunteer Day. I can’t think of a better way to communicate my value for giving and kindness than to simply spend a few hours “doing” with my family.

Volunteering in my household is a favorite family past time. My children love the opportunity to be of use to someone else and to concretely see how their actions impact those around them. At the age of 4 and 8 they also love the opportunity to be entrusted with a tool and to have their bodies in motion.  Even better when they get to do all this with friends, which is what makes Family Volunteer Day so special. If you join the fun this weekend then you can expect to be surrounded by hundreds of other families of like-mind.

Started 27 years ago by Points of Light Foundation, This global day of service celebrates the power of families to work together in support of their communities and neighborhoods. Projects are carefully selected to ensure they are accessible to people of all ages.

This year in Santa Cruz County, in partnership with fellow nonprofits we are offering 9 different projects to choose from. Each run from two to three hours. Your family can help clean beaches, beautify neighborhoods, help with local event prep, garden, or restore local wetlands.

If you sign up to join a project by November 15th you will be entered into a drawing for 4 all-day passes to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and 4 tickets to ride the train at Roaring Camp Railroad.
